Liberal Party

Quick Reference

(Australia) A major political party in Australia. The original party emerged in 1910 as an alliance of various groups opposed to the Australian Labor Party, led by Forrest. They were known for a while as the Fusion Party, adopting the title Liberal in 1913. The new Liberal Party was created in 1944 by Robert Menzies, and a Liberal‐Country coalition has alternated with Labor since then, being in office under Malcolm Fraser (1975–83). After five successive Labor governments, the Liberal Party returned to power in 1996 under John Howard.
