His works include a Hand‐Book to the Popular Poetical and Dramatic Literature of Great Britain…to the Restoration (1867), Bibliographical Collections and Notes (1876–89, 3 series), memoirs of his grandfather (1867), an edition of English Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases Collected from the Most Authentic Sources (1869, for which H. G. Bohn accused him of plagiarism), Letters of Charles Lamb (1886). His Confessions of a Collector appeared in 1897. Schoenbaum describes him as ‘unreliable’ and ‘an antiquarian bumbler’.
