the great Spanish novelist and dramatist. La Galatea (1585), a pastoral novel, was followed by his masterpiece Don Quixote (Pt I 1605; Pt II 1615), a satirical romance. He wrote several plays (16 of which survive), a collection of short stories (Novelas ejemplares, 1613) and a tale of adventure, Persiles y Sigismunda (1617). J. Fletcher drew largely on the last two of these for his plots.
