Vinoba Bhave

(1895—1982) spiritual leader in India

Quick Reference

(1895–1982)

A social and religious reformer who was a follower of M. K. Gāndhī. In the immediate aftermath of Independence, he was the chief proponent of the Sarvodaya (‘welfare of all’) movement, designed to improve the lot of peasants through the ‘voluntary gift of land’ (H.: bhū-dān). His single-minded devotion to the welfare of others has resulted in a near saint-like status.
