Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono

(b. 1949)

Quick Reference

(SBY)

(b. 9 Sept 1949),

President of Indonesia, 2004–  Born in Pacitan, East Java, he graduated from the Military Academy in 1973, and rose quickly through the army ranks to become general. Popularly known by his initials, SBY left the army in 2000, serving as minister in the government of Abdurrahman Wahid. He continued to hold a position in the government of Sukarnoputri, as minister responsible for counter‐terrorism. Owing to his rising popularity in that position, SBY was sacked by his jealous President. He founded the Democratic Party, and on the promise of overcoming corruption and graft he won Indonesia's first democratic elections. Although SBY struggled to improve the economy, he did manage to sign a breakthrough peace agreement with the rebels in the Aceh province, ending years of bitter conflict there.
