A novel by C. Kingsley, published in Fraser's Magazine 1848, in volume form 1851.
This was the first of Kingsley's novels and is crude as a literary work. It deals with some of the social and religious problems of the day (the miserable conditions of the rustic labourer, the game laws, and Tractarianism: see oxford movement), largely by means of dialogues between the hero and various other characters. See also social problem novel.
