Wielen dip

Quick Reference

A feature of the luminosity function of stars. Instead of rising steadily towards fainter absolute magnitudes, the number of stars increases little between absolute magnitudes 6 and 9. This feature may provide a clue to the formation of stars of different masses, but its full significance is not yet understood. It is named after its discoverer, the German astronomer Roland Wielen (1938– ).
