The war launched by President George W. Bush in the aftermath of the outrage of September 11, 2001, when he vowed that the USA would use its armed might to destroy terrorist organizations and any regimes that harbour them. In October 2001 the USA attacked Afghanistan, using air strikes to destroy the command centres of the al‐Qaida movement and to bring down the anti‐Western Taliban regime. Subsequently, the focus shifted to so‐called “rogue states” such as Saddam Hussein's Iraq, which was invaded and occupied by US‐led forces in 2003 (see Iraq War.
