Closely linked to, or embodied in, the mission statement, particularly of colleges and universities, and embodying a summary of the institution's purpose and direction, ‘vision’ is one of many examples of business language usage which have become part of the vocabulary of education. Senge (1990) describes vision as an articulation of the envisioned future which the institution wishes to create, while Barrett (1998) suggests it is a statement of how the institution will achieve fulfilment of purpose. Both of these theorists are writing in the context of the management of large business organizations. In colleges and universities the organizational vision is decided by those with executive power.
