Triple Entente

Quick Reference

In 1907, the Entente Cordiale between Britain and France was supplemented by a series of agreements between Britain and Russia, which itself was a military ally of France. The Triple Entente, though only an informal alliance, confirmed German paranoia about an ‘encirclement’ by these great powers, and thus helped to increase its tendency towards aggressive behaviour which ultimately led to World War I. Ironically, it was only after the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914 that the Triple Entente was transformed into a military alliance.
