A change in the appearance of the grain or microstructure of a surface, an abrupt or sudden change providing a cue for the perception of a contour, and a gradual change (as when the blades of grass in a meadow appear widely spaced in the foreground and increasingly close together towards the background) being a form of perspective that is related to aerial perspective and linear perspective and is one of the monocular cues of visual depth perception (see illustration).
