A style of painting, and to a certain extent sculpture, popular in the United States and Britain from the late 1960s and characterized by its use of minute detail in its depiction of its subjects. A number of Superrealist artists used photographs as the basis of their work, projecting colour slides onto their canvases and often working to an over life-size scale. Leading American Superrealist painters include Chuck Close, Robert Cottingham, and Richard Estes.
