Souls of Black Folk
Collection of essays and sketches by W. E. B. Du Bois, published in 1903. The 15 pieces in the book include sociological studies of sharecroppers and small farmers, sensitive interpretation of music related to black religious services, a historical study of the Freedmen's Bureau, and a searching consideration of Booker T. Washington, praising some of his activities but going beyond him in calling for higher education for blacks and for more militant action.
