Quick Reference

A decrease in dimension. Casting shrinkage occurs when a molten metal such as gold alloy solidifies; it is compensated for by expansion of the refractory casting material during setting and by thermal expansion prior to casting. Polymerization shrinkage can occur during the curing of a resin based material and can be a significant problem during the polymerization of resin denture material or during the placement of a resin composite restoration.
