German dramatist and lyric poet, and one of the principal figures of the Sturm und Drang period and of German Romanticism in general. He was deeply influenced by Shakespeare, and greatly admired by Hazlitt and Coleridge. His principal plays include Don Carlos (1787), Wallenstein (1799), Maria Stuart (1800), and Wilhelm Tell (1804). His essays on aesthetics influenced the Schlegels and Coleridge.
