A New Zealand-born physicist, Rutherford worked at the Universities of Cambridge and Manchester, and at McGill University in Canada. He made important studies of radiation and the structure of the atom, developing the concept of a half-life for the decay of radioisotopes. This concept led directly to the techniques of radiometric dating.
