Jean Pucelle

(c. 1319—1334)

Quick Reference

(d ?Paris, ?1334).

French manuscript illuminator. Little is known of his career, but his large workshop dominated Parisian painting in the first half of the 14th century. His work commanded high prices and—unusually for the time—his reputation endured after his death. Among the manuscripts attributed to him is the Book of Hours of Queen Jeanne d'Evreux (1325–8, Met. Mus., New York). Certain features of his work—particularly his mastery of space—indicate that he probably travelled in Italy early in his career, and he was also familiar with Netherlandish developments.
