Any organism in which the genetic material is not enclosed in a cell nucleus. Prokaryotes consist exclusively of bacteria, i.e. archaebacteria and eubacteria, which are now generally classified in separate domains, Archaea and Eubacteria. It is believed that eukaryotic cells (see eukaryote) evolved as symbiotic associations of prokaryotes (see endosymbiont theory).
