Overview

pointillism

Quick Reference

The term was derived from the French critic Félix Fénéon's phrase peinture au point (‘painting in dots’) used in 1886 to describe Georges Seurat's masterpiece La Grande Jatte (Art Institute, Chicago). However, Seurat and his chief disciple, Paul Signac, preferred the word Divisionism. See Neo-impressionism.
