Overview

Philitas

Quick Reference

Of Cos, poet and scholar, b. c.340 bc. Although little of his work has survived, Philitas clearly influenced Hellenistic and Latin poetry. He came to represent the combination of literary scholarship and poetic creativity emulated by Callimachus (2) and other ‘learned poets’. His poetry was admired for its learning, small scale, and polish; his narrative elegy Demeter was esp. highly esteemed, and thought to be the object of many allusions by later poets. The character of Philetas in Longus' Daphnis and Chloe may be the vehicle for reminiscences of P.'s poems.
