St Patrick

(c. 389—461) patron saint of Ireland

Quick Reference

(5th century)

Apostle and patron saint of Ireland. His Confession is the chief source for the events of his life. Of Romano-British parentage, he was captured at the age of 16 by raiders and shipped to Ireland as a slave; there he experienced a religious conversion. Escaping after six years, probably to Gaul, he was ordained and returned to Ireland in about 432.
