A public speech or written composition devoted to the prolonged, effusive praise of some person, group of people, or public body (e.g. a government or army). This branch of rhetoric was particularly cultivated in ancient Greece and Rome. A composer or speaker of a panegyric is known as a panegyrist. Verb: panegyrize. See also encomium, éloge.
