The process of bone formation. It is brought about by the action of special cells called osteoblasts, which deposit layers of bone in connective tissue. In intramembranous ossification bones are formed directly in connective tissue (see membrane bone); in endochondral ossification the bones are formed by the replacement of cartilage (see cartilage bone).
