Overview

Organization of the Islamic Conference

Quick Reference

Founded in 1971 in the aftermath of a 1969 fire at the al-Aqsa mosque. Primary goals are the promotion of Islamic solidarity among member states; consolidation of cooperation in economic, social, cultural, scientific, and other fields of activity; carrying out consultations among member states in international organizations; elimination of all forms of racial segregation, discrimination, and colonialism (including that of Israel in Palestine); and support for international peace and security founded on justice. Has been more successful in cultural programs than in political matters. Based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, it currently has fifty-three member states and several observers. The most important affiliated institution is the Islamic Development Bank.
