Friedrich Max Müller
(1823—1900) Sanskritist and philologist
comparative philologist and religious writer. A German by birth, he went to Oxford in 1848 to supervise the printing of the first edition of the Rig-Veda. He soon held senior office in the university. In 1875 he undertook the editing of The Sacred Books of the East, a series of translations of E. religious classics in 51 volumes. He also wrote on the comparative study of religion.
