Count Carlo Cesare Malvasia
(b Bologna, 18 Dec. 1616; d Bologna, 9 Mar. 1693).
Italian writer and antiquarian. His major work, Felsina pittrice: vite de' pittori bolognesi (1678), is the most important source for knowledge of the great period of the Bolognese School that began with the Carracci (Felsina was the ancient Etruscan name for Bologna). It contains a remarkably revealing biography of his friend Reni. Malvasia also wrote a guide to the paintings of Bologna (1686), one of the first books of its kind.
