Quick Reference

A layer of the atmosphere containing ions and free electrons. The ionosphere is warmed as it absorbs solar radiation, and it will reflect radio waves. Three bands are recognized: E, F, and F2, at about 110, 160, and 300 km above the earth. The ionosphere is in a state of constant motion, and is affected by tidal forces and by the earth's magnetic field.
