Major contributor to the development of Arabic literature (adab). As a judge, wrote Kitab tawil mushkil al-Quran (On the problem of Quranic interpretation), a study of problematic aspects of Quranic style, and Kitab adab al-katib (The correct behavior for bureaucrats), but best known for literary works such as Kitab uyun al-akhbar (Book of choice narratives), an anthology divided into ten topics (such as eloquence, friendship, war, and women), and Kitab al-shir wal-shuara (Book of poetry and poets), containing his theory of literary criticism. Also wrote a handbook of history, Kitab al-maarif (Book of knowledge).
