Overview
group identification
Quick Reference
In social psychology, an individual's sense of belonging to a particular social, cultural, or subcultural group. Social identity theory focuses on the contribution of group membership to the self-concept. The American sociologist Robert E. Park (1864–1944) proposed that a universal preference for the familiar and for those who are perceived as being like oneself underlies group identification. In-group identification is associated with ethnocentrism. See also primary and secondary groups; reference group.
