(1794—1871) historian and politician
was MP for the City of London, 1832–41, and took an active part in favour of the reform movement. His outlook was much influenced by James Mill (see Utilitarianism). He retired from Parliament in order to devote himself to his famous History of Greece (8 vols, 1846–56). Grote's other works include studies of Plato (1865) and Aristotle (1872).
