Gauḍapāda

Quick Reference

(c.6th century ce)

Reputed author of the earliest identifiable Advaita text, the Gauḍapādīya Kārikā, he is considered by the tradition to be the teacher of Govindapāda, and so Śaṅkara's paramaguru (his teacher's teacher). A commentary on the Sāṃkhya Kārikā, the Gauḍapāda Bhāṣya, is also attributed to him. Some modern commentators have suggested that he may have been a Buddhist, but, at most, he seems to have reconstituted certain Yogācāra ideas.
