(1564—1642) Italian astronomer and physicist

Italian astronomer and natural philosopher, who was one of the earliest true experimental scientists. He constructed, but did not necessarily invent, a thermoscope and thermometer. He had several gifted students, most notably Evangelista Torricelli, who invented the barometer.
