Brian Faulkner

(1921—1977) prime minister of Northern Ireland

Quick Reference

(1921–77).

One of the ablest of Northern Irish Unionist prime ministers, Faulkner was from a commercial rather than a landed background. He became the last Northern Irish premier in March 1971 and won British government support for a stiff security policy culminating in internment. The failure of that policy led him to change stance and accept the power‐sharing executive following the Sunningdale agreement of 1973. He became chief executive of the new administration, which collapsed after the loyalist strike of 1974. Faulkner died in a hunting accident.
