Overview
Esquiline
Quick Reference
The eastern plateau formed in Rome by the Oppian and Cispian hills, the regiō Esquilīna being the second of the republican Four Regions (See regio). It was included within the republican wall (wall of Servius) and provided later sites for Nero's Domus Aurea and the baths of Titus and Trajan. Under Augustus the name was applied to Regio V, outside the republican wall, which contained gardens belonging to rich aristocrats, notably the Gardens of Maecenas; many of these later came into the possession of the emperors.
