(1524—1583) Swiss theologian and physician

Quick Reference

Swiss theologian and physician. He was professor of medicine at Heidelberg University from 1558. A follower of Zwingli, he opposed the imposition of a Calvinistic system of church government in Heidelberg because of the Calvinists' excessive use of excommunication. The doctrine of Erastianism (that the state should have supremacy over the Church in ecclesiastical matters) was later attributed to him, although his views were less extreme.
