A Rinzai zen temple founded in 1282 by the Chinese monk Wu-hsüeh Tsu-yüan (Jap., Mugaku Sōgen) in the city of Kamakura. It is the head temple of the Engakuji sect of Rinzai, and was one of the original ‘Five Mountains’ temples established by the Ashikaga government at the end of the 13th century in an effort to gain some control over the Zen movement.
