Consul 260 bc, appointed to command in west Sicily; took over command of Rome's first battle‐fleet. Using a rotatable boarding‐bridge, he defeated the Carthaginians under Hannibal (not the famous Hannibal) off Mylae. After returning to Italy (259), he celebrated Rome's first naval triumph, commemorated by the columna rostrāta (a column decorated with the beaks of captured ships in the Forum). From the booty of Mylae, Duilius built a temple to Janus in the forum Holitorium. He was censor in 258 and dictator to hold elections in 231.
