Quick Reference

(1900–75)

Russian-born US geneticist who was a key figure in the development of population genetics. His long-term studies of natural populations of the fruit fly Drosophila in New Mexico revealed the high frequencies of potentially harmful alleles that are generally concealed by normal ‘wild-type’ alleles, but which can confer selective advantage under certain environmental conditions. His many books include Genetics and the Origin of Species (1937), a seminal work in the synthesis of genetics and evolutionary biology.
