(German, ‘German Work Federation’)
An association of architects and manufacturers, formed in Munich in 1907, and dedicated to achieving high artistic quality in industrial work. It was highly influential on the development of modern architecture and design, and was inspired by the writings of Hermann Muthesius. Its most famous member was the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The Werkbund was an important predecessor of the Bauhaus school of design. It was suppressed by the Nazis, but was revived after the Second World War.
