cyclopamine

An alkaloid, produced by the skunk cabbage Veratrum californicum, that is a potent teratogen and causes major developmental defects (e.g. cyclopia) by blocking the hedgehog signalling pathway. Cyclopamine will block the oncogenic effects of mutations of patched (see Gorlin's syndrome).
