English architectural historian. He made a considerable contribution to the study of Neo-Classicism in Britain with his work on Smirke, the British Museum, and the Greek Revival. His elegant book on William Burges is one of the most substantial studies of any Victorian architect, while his investigations of styles have added to his reputation. A monograph on John Carter has shed new light on aspects of antiquarianism and the Gothic Revival, He co-edited part of the History of the King's Works (1973–6).
