British dancer and choreographer. He studied at the Royal Ballet School and joined the Royal Ballet in 1973. In 1978–9 he was with Dutch National Ballet, between 1979 and 1981 he was with Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet as a soloist, and from 1981 he was with the Joffrey Ballet. He created his first work in 1974 for the Royal Ballet Choreographic Group and his first professional production was Rhyme nor Reason (mus. Stravinsky) for Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet in 1978. As a choreographer he rapidly established a reputation for the fluency and classical finesse of his dance invention, one of the few of his generation to remain within the language of the danse d'ecole. He made several more works for the Sadler's Wells company including Day into Night (mus. Martinů, 1980), Three Pictures (mus. Bartók, 1981), The Wand of Youth (1985), and Gloriana (1987) while for the Royal Ballet he made L'Invitation au voyage (1982), Party Game (1984), Number Three (1985), Masquerade (mus. Stravinsky, 1999), and the ‘Water’ choreography for the revised version of Ashton's Homage to the Queen (2006). For English National Ballet he made Cinderella (mus. Prokofiev, 1996), which was taken into the repertoire of the Boston Ballet, Melody on the Move (mus. various, 2003), and The Snow Queen (mus. Prokofiev, 2007). He has also choreographed Romeo and Juliet (mus. Prokofiev, 1992) for the Norwegian National Ballet and Stravinsky's Le Baiser de la fée for Birmingham Royal Ballet (2008) along with works for the Hong Kong Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, and the Kobayashi Ballet Theater in Tokyo.
