Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy
A millimetre-wave radio telescope created by combining the antennae of the former Owens Valley Radio Observatory's millimetre array and the Berkeley–Illinois–Maryland Association (BIMA) Array on a new site at an altitude of 2440 m at Cedar Flat, in the Inyo Mountains of eastern California. The CARMA array consists of six antennae of 10.4 m (from the Owens Valley array) and nine of 6.1 m (from the BIMA array), distributed in a pseudo–random pattern giving baselines up to 2 km. It came into full operation in 2007. In 2008 these were joined by eight 3.5-m antennas belonging to the University of Chicago, completing a 23-element interferometer.
