Russian general. He won a brilliant campaign against Austria-Hungary (1916) in south-west Russia, which, although it cost Russia at least a million lives, forced Germany to divert troops from the Somme and encouraged Romania to join the Allies. After the fall of the Russian emperor he sided with the Bolsheviks and directed the war against Poland.
