Russian-US painter and designer. One of the foremost ballet designers in America for more than thirty years. His productions included Ashton's Devil's Holiday (1939), Balanchine's Concerto Barocco (1941), Danses concertantes (1944), Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (1944), and Pulcinella (1972), Tudor's Romeo and Juliet (1943), and American Ballet Theatre's 1946 production of Giselle. He also designed the opulent setting for Balanchine's Ballet Imperial when it was revived for Sadler's Wells Ballet in 1950.
