Overview

Lilian Baylis

(1874—1937) theatre manager

Quick Reference

(b London, 1874; d London, 1937)

British theatre manager whose vision helped to create what eventually became the Royal Ballet. She began by running the Old Vic Theatre in 1912, and in 1926 she engaged de Valois to stage dances for the plays and operas she was presenting. When Sadler's Wells was rebuilt in 1931 Baylis took de Valois and her dancers with her to the new theatre, thus establishing a permanent home for both a national dance company and a school.
