Canadian statesman. Born in York (renamed Toronto in 1834), he was elected to the Assembly of Upper Canada in 1829 and became one of the leaders of the campaign for reformed government that would give more say to elected representatives. After the Act of Union (1840) he was elected for Canada West and in 1842–43 led a reformist ministry with Sir Louis‐Hippolyte La Fontaine.
