Quick Reference

B. 19 Sept. 1486, elder s. of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York; m. Catherine, da. of Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile, 14 Nov. 1501; d. 2 Apr. 1502; bur. Worcester.

The birth of prince Arthur, so soon after Henry VII's marriage to Elizabeth of York, seemed the culmination of his attempt to reconcile the two great factions of Lancaster and York. The long-awaited marriage to Catherine of Aragon took place at St Paul's in November 1501, and the young couple set up court at Ludlow, where the prince was in nominal charge of the Council of the Marches. However, he died of consumption less than five months after marriage, and was buried in a special chantry in Worcester cathedral. Catherine's marriage to his younger brother Henry took place in June 1509.
