St Antoninus

(1389—1459)

Quick Reference

(1389–1459),

Abp. of Florence. He became a Dominican in 1404/5 and was among those who sought to restore the primitive observances and austerity of the Order. His appointment as Abp. of Florence in 1446 is said to have been made on the advice of Fra Angelico. He became the counsellor of popes and statesmen. He was also a distinguished theological writer. He held that money invested in business was true capital and that it was therefore not necessarily wrong to receive interest. Feast day, 10 May.
