Anglo-Irish agreement
Quick Reference
1985,
signed at Hillsborough, Co. Down, on 15 November 1985, by Margaret Thatcher and the taoiseach (prime minister) of Ireland, Dr Garret FitzGerald. The agreement was intended to promote reconciliation within Northern Ireland, and co‐operation between the British and Irish governments. Ulster Unionists saw it as establishing a form of joint authority, and mounted a ferocious campaign of opposition in 1985–6.
